California Might See Drop in Jobless Benefits

Thousands of Californians could see a reduction in their jobless benefits, as a result of our improving economy.

Right now the long-term unemployed can collect 26 weeks of state benefits, 14 weeks of federal ones, and then four additional tiers of extensions that are based on our jobless rate. But, that's about to change.

"We do anticipate that barring any huge swing in the unemployment rate, that we announce for June tomorrow, that we will be losing eligibility for Tier 4," Loree Levy with the Employment Development Department said.

Eligibility for each varying tier of benefits depend upon the severity of a state's unemployment, Levy said. Tier 4 is a final ten weeks of help.

Because it's expected that the state's jobless rate will drop again tomorrow, and fall below a threshold. About 100,000 people could be affected.
