SACRAMENTO -- A mile-long levee project is going on at the American River near Highway 160.

Crews have been taking down the old, existing levee, Tyler Stalker with the U.S. Corps of Engineers said. Work is being done along a one-mile stretch of levee.

The work is being done along Highway 160, and in the next couple of weeks crews will start building a cut-off wall, which will go about 60 feet deep into the levee, Stalker said.

The cut-off wall is to keep water from seeping under the earthen mound, causing leaks and potentially a collapse.

After the cut-off wall is complete, crews will begin building the levee back up.

Expect the newly strengthened levee to be ready by November.
