ELK GROVE, Calif. -- Elk Grove is one of eight cities in California to receive federal grants to preserve the past -- the state Office of Historic Preservation announced this week that Elk Grove will receive $24,000 to update its survey of Old Town.

Officials say the city has struggled to distinguish what remains historic with all the development that has happened.

Elk Grove's Old Town was placed on the National Historic Register more than 20 years ago -- it runs through the heart of the city along Elk Grove Boulevard.
