Swatting Bill

Swatting Bill

Lawmakers in California are moving forward with a plan to crack down on celebrity "swatting."  A bill by Southern California Senator Ted Lieu that would stiffen penalties for those who phone in fake 911 calls was approved by the state Senate Public Safety Committee today and will likely see a full Senate vote in June.  Under Lieu's bill, such pranksters could face lengthier jail time and would be forced to pay police departments the cost of responding to such phony calls.  "Swatting" has become a large problem in the Los Angeles area, with LAPD officers responding to what turned out to be bogus calls at the homes of Russell Brand, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Selena Gomez among others in recent days.
