A 61-year-old Sacramento County old woman is dead after getting the flu.

The county health department says this was the first influenza death of the 2013/2014 flu season. The unidentified woman had been hospitalized in the intensive care unit prior to her death, and died of complications.

The California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control both recommend yearly flu vaccinations for everyone six months of age and older, including pregnant women.

They say it's especially important to be vaccinated if you have regular contact with people more vulnerable to the complications of flu, including babies, children with asthma, and the elderly.
