California has the highest poverty rate in the nation according to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

New data shows 23.6% of Californians, almost 9 million, are living below the poverty line.  That's set at $22,800 for a family of four.

The figures are similar to those recently released by the Public Policy Institute.  Their survey shows 22% of state residents, or just over 8 million, live in poverty.

Sacramento County comes in below the average with 17% of families living in poverty, defined as $27,500 for a family of four.

Yolo County had the highest percentage of families in poverty in the area according to the Public Policy Institute.

That dubious honor becuase 23.6% of families live on less than $28,800.
