It's a visible reminder.

183 traffic cones were positioned on the west steps of the State Capitol today for a Caltrans memorial.

Each one represented a worker who's died while on the job.

Michelle Grubbs lost a family member in 1987.

"Thank you to each of you, some traveling more than four hours to get here. I may not know your name or your face, but I know that you're family," she said.

Hundreds turned out for the annual ceremony, where two new cones were added.

A pair of maintenance workers died last year during a rock scaling operation in Siskiyou County.

Another employee was also honored today. He was hit and killed on his motorcycle on the way to last year's memorial service.
