Can Anything be Salvaged from the Rim Fire?

Nothing can undo the devastation left by the Rim Fire, but state lawmakers are racing to salvage what they can.

The Rim Fire was the third largest fire in California history, more than 400 square miles near Yosemite burned, and over a month after the fire started, it's still burning.

But experts say there's one billion board feet of timber that can still be salvaged. The trick is getting it out. It needs to be done within the next 18 months, and California's environmental regulations don't move that fast.

Enter a new bill introduced at the state capital. It would relax the regulations so the state can recoup at least a small part of tremendous loss.
