The California Department of Justice has arrested five people in connection with an illegal recycling scheme.

Based in Reno, the five -- ranging in age from 22 to 57 -- have been illegally collecting can and bottle redemptions.

"They would buy cans in Nevada where there is no redemption value, and then load them into large trucks, and bring them to recycling centers in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley areas," Mark Oldfield with CalRecycle said.

Oldfield said the five claimed more than $300,000 in their scheme and face numerous felony charges include recycling fraud, conspiracy and grand theft. If they're convicted, they will face prison time.

A 17-month investigation led to the arrests.  A 60-year old man is still being sought.
