A new survey of gun dealers and pawnbrokers across 43 states has found strong support for denying gun purchases to those with prior convictions or a history of mental illness, violence or alcohol or drug abuse.

A team of researchers from UC Davis says a majority of respondents also supported a comprehensive background check requirements to be in place.

The study is believed to be the first of its kind to gather the views of licensed dealers on social issues regarding the gun industry.
