IRS Warns of Sophisticated Telephone Scam
Posted November 4th, 2013 @ 6:31am by KFBK News - Joe Michaels

The IRS is warning consumers of a sophisticated telephone scam that's targeting taxpayers throughout the country.

Scammers are telling victims they owe money to the IRS and that it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer.

"They're using fake names and they're providing fake IRS badge numbers. They're also sometimes providing tyhe last four digits of a victim's Social Security number," David Tucker from the IRS says.

Tucker says if a victim refuses to cooperate, they're often threatened with arrest, suspension of a business or driver's license and even deportation:

"So if you hear someone calling you from the IRS, and you've not received any sort of notice or anything else of that nature, then you should be aware that this is most likely a scam," Tucker said.

Report it by calling the Treasury Inspector General's office.
