St. Louis police say a knife-weilding man was shot to death by police officers today.
St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Sam Dotson said witnesses said the victim was brandishing a knife at officers.
Two officers shot the man to death after he lunged at them with a knife.
The man, 23, had allegedly taken energy drinks and a package of pastries from a nearby convenience store.
Dotson said during a news conference the suspect was acting erratically and yelling "Shoot me. Shoot me now."
The incident took place about four miles from the town of Ferguson, where people have been protesting the death of Michael Brown for more than a week now.
An alderwoman witnessed today's incident.
Dotson said he is well aware of the unrest in nearby Ferguson, Missouri, and said the department will be very transparent about the shooting.
