A bill that would require colleges around California to report sexual assaults and hate crimes to local police is moving through the state Legislature.

The bill passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee today and will soon head to the Assembly floor for a full vote.

Los Angeles Assemblyman Mike Gatto, who authored the bill, says universities and colleges have an obligation to make sure students are safe from such assaults and crimes.

The bill comes after several schools around California were accused of covering-up sexual assaults on campus to keep their crime statistics low.
