REPORT: State Can't Account for 174,000 Tons of Hazardous Waste

The State of California has not been properly tracking waste that is considered hazardous to your health.

California cannot account for 174,000 tons of hazardous material shipped for disposal in the last five years. That's according to an LA Times report that says state regulators have lost track of large quantities of toxic chemicals and cancer-causing metals.

State regulators say there are flaws in their tracking system but they insist public health is not threatened. California officials also tell the Times they're confident that missing shipments end up in disposal sites, but admit they can't be sure.
