Sacramento City Councilman Steve Hansen will be fighting Kevin Johnson's strong-mayor initiative into the November election saying that it's nothing but a "power grab."
"It won't make the city better, so I don't understand why we need it," Hansen said.
The first term representative tells KFBK that the current system is working, and the new downtown arena and policy changes for job creation are evidence of that.
"We did some polling, and it shows about 62 percent of voters don't like this measure, and of them, a large portion really appreciate the mayor, like I do," he said.
The strong-mayor plan would give the mayor many of the powers of the city manager -- including proposing the budget.
Supporters say a similar form of government is seen in several other large cities and would make the mayor more accountable to voters.
