Food Stamp fraud is a hot issue for State Republicans as a hearing into misuse gets the green light.

Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff pushed for the hearings. Huff Spokesman Peter DeMarco gave a high profile example of someone gaming the food stamp system.

"There was a news story not too long ago that profiled an individual who dines regularly on sushi and grilled lobster, and spends his day surfing, and is able to support it by what he receives from food stamps," DeMarco said.

The call for a hearing on the matter comes as Washington is pressuring Sacramento over lax fraud detection and low participation among eligible people in the CalFresh program.  Expect the hearings to begin in January.
