UPDATE: Lodi Crash Suspect Asks for Public Defender

Posted Wednesday, November 13th 2013 @ 5pm  by KFBK News

Wearing a casual red jail outfit, Ryan Christopher Morales was escorted into Department 35 of the courthouse at 1:30 this afternoon.

The presiding judge read a list of charges that include 6 counts of murder, 6 counts of gross vehicular homicide and felony driving under the influence with a great bodily injury enhancement.

Morales was asked if he understood the charges, and he requested a public defender.

The public defender immediately asked for a continuance of a month, but will have to make that request next Monday, when Judge Johnson takes the case.

After the brief arraignment, members of the Morales family hurried to leave, one saying out-loud, "nobody comment."

Despite the discouragement, Ryan's Aunt, Cheryl Morales, said she WANTED to.

"I'm very sorry for everything that's happened, and the whole family is very sorry," said Morales.

Cheryl Morales said she was "overwhelmed" by the turn of events and that Ryan was very depressed and very upset over what's happened, but that he hadn't found out until he was told later.

Morales is accused of causing an Oct. 22nd accident that killed six members of the Rodriguez family.

The collision at Ham Lane and Vine Street involved several other vehicles and injured others.

Eden Miranda, 9, is the lone survivor in the family and was released from the hospital earlier this month.

Morales was seriously injured in the crash and hospitalized. He was released from the hospital and placed under arrest on Nov. 8.
