West Nile virus activity continues to increase in Sacramento County.

The Mosquito and Vector Control District says the virus is now in widespread locations throughout the county, especially in Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks and around the Delta Islands.

Authorities encourage you to protect yourself from mosquitos this holiday weekend -- especially when watching evening fireworks.

Seventy-six mosquitoes and 65 dead birds have tested positive for West Nile in Sacramento County so far this year.

Activity is also on the rise throughout the state, with 23 counties now reporting West Nile -- including three human cases.
