Woman Faces Unexpected Medical Bills After Signing Up for Health Care

It's the kind of story that makes you think twice about Covered California.

News10 reports Aimee Grenfell purchased what she thought was a good Blue Cross plan off the Covered California site.

She got treatment for her pre-existing condition at Sutter Health.

Then, she got the bill: $7,000. Turns out Sutter Health didn't accept Blue Cross' plan sold through Covered California.

"I had no idea that because I was a Covered California patient that I would be excluded," Grenfell said.

An error in the provider directory on the Covered California website is to blame for Aimee's coverage snafu.

Covered California is offering to help her clear it up, but Sutter Health accepted her Blue Cross Card as coverage, then recanted.

Sutter says there is confusion on behalf of the plans. But that still leaves Aimee Grenfell on the hook for $7,000.
